Editorial Review:

Editorial ReviewYou are Solid Snake, a superspy who's half James Bond, half Snake Plissken, and you are mean. Your mission isn't terribly new (infiltrate a terrorist base and blow everything up), but the gameplay is: your numerous enemies are watching for you, and you are encouraged to sneak rather than simply charge in. Every level brings new challenges. You fight snipers, invisible ninjas, psychic warriors, and even an M-1 tank! As the father of the modern spy game genre, this game is an instant classic.

Your allies and superiors speak to you via a cool, implanted radio, monitoring your progress, offering tips--but failing to give you the full story. The combination of a mysterious and engaging plot and high in-game tension makes this a thrilling ride. Campy humor also abounds as you rescue beautiful women, verbally spar with your allies, and blow up enemies in the bathroom. A user-friendly control interface allows for sniping, hiding, crawling, and running, and the graphics leave nothing to be desired. If you like espionage, spy movies, or just want to own and play a piece of gaming history, then this is a must have. Metal Gear Solid is one of the all-time greats. Game tip: Secretly attach plastic explosives behind an enemy, sneak out of the room, and see what happens. --Allen Stewart

Pros:
  • Story well-integrated into gameplay
  • Stealth favored over brute force
  • Challenging puzzles
Cons:
  • Puzzles can be frustrating
  • Torture scene too intense for younger gamers

Features:
  • Lightly Armed and facing an army of foes, Snake must avoid firefights in order to survive.
  • If Snake can locate them he can utilize advanced hardware, ranging from silenced pistols to ground-to-air missiles.
  • Enemies react to sight and sound - so stay quiet and stay in the shadows.
  • State-of-the-art graphics, textures, transparencies, models & explosions.
  • Taut, gripping story with multiple endings - a truly cinematic experience.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the greatsest video games ever made!!
This game is a total classic in every way. The plot, the gameplay, the characters...everything!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great game
This is quite possibly the best game I've ever played in my entire life. The graphics are good but the game play is even better. The game is SO LONG which makes it AWESOME. Really good AI as well.

Overall, great game, probably the best I've ever played. Buy it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The most compelling, emotional, enduring game of all time.
First off...This is the single greatest video game of all time in my opinion. No other game has charaters and acting like this. The only, ONLY! downside to the game is the graphics in some parts of the game. If you do not own this game, you are truly not a gamer.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best game on the PS1 Console
In light of PS3 releasing an update that will allow upscaling of PS1 and PS2 games to 1080p, I feel compelled to revisit some of the games that made me a solid sony fan. MGS is one of those games that comes along once every console, where the developers, producers and screen writers all seem to be on the same page, and create a master-piece. This game was revolutionary, in the sense that it focused more on the concept of espionage, rather than the usual "run n gun." I played this game back in 1998, when it was first released, and have been following the game ever since. This game made my jaw drop with the graphics it pushed out of the ps1, and the storyline is amazing. Theres love, hate, plot twists, dual endings and so much more that combine to make this game great. One thing I remember is the battle with Psycho Mantis; (a crazy military psychic)who knew every move you were going to do before you did it. At one point he tells you to "put the controller down to see his true power" and with a hardy yell, my controller vibrated right off the coffee table! Of course it was the rumble feature, but how unique is that? We were all tripped out on the greatness of this game, and the intelligence put into the storyline. This game is by far the best game on the ps1, and if you havent played it yet, now its not too late. Get it, play it, and then buy the others for the PS2, Metal Gear -Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear- Snake Eater. If you got a PS3 be on the look out for Guns of the Patriots coming out on March 1 2008, its going to be amazing.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - the game that started it all
The release of this game in 1998 influnced a lot of game developers that Stealth is more important than using brute force when facing lots of enemies.

Before this game was released, there was no game that was like it but Thanks to Mr. Kojima-san ressurecting Solid Snake to the Playstation, using it's 3D capabilities compared to the old 2D version of the previous games, the legendary mercenary lives again!

The Voice acting on the game are top-notch and gives realism to the situation which the REmake "Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes" lacks.
The music suits every situation that you are in while playing the game and keeps you interested.

Eclipse3.1M3 comes out later today..

A contractor working for the Home Office loses a computer memory stick containing details of tens of thousands of criminals.

1962: NS Savannah, the world's first nuclear-powered cargo-passenger ship, completes its maiden voyage.

In a world terrified by the prospect of nuclear war, the Savannah was meant to demonstrate the peaceful use and positive potential of nuclear power. President Eisenhower conceived the idea as part of his "Atoms for Peace" program in 1955, a time when the United States and Soviet Union were routinely testing increasingly powerful nuclear weapons.

Four nuclear-powered merchant ships were eventually built.

The Savannah, named for the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean in 1819, was in every sense of the word a showcase. The ship was given a sleek, streamlined design that wasn't really compatible with stowing large amounts of cargo, a fact that would eventually shorten its career.

Passenger accommodation was comparable to many conventional liners of the day. There were 30 air-conditioned staterooms, a dining room for 100 people, a swimming pool, a library and a lounge that could be converted into a cinema.

But the heart of the Savannah was its nuclear propulsion system, which at $28 million ($203 million in today's money) cost more than the ship itself, a mere $18.5 million ($134 million today). The Babcock and Wilcox nuclear reactor drove Savannah's two steam-turbine engines cheaply and efficiently.

In the end, though, it wasn't economical enough to offset the tight forward cargo area and other deficiencies that made the ship too expensive to operate commercially. Its tapered bow not only limited the cargo capacity to 8,500 tons -- well below that of contemporary vessels -- but also made loading difficult, especially as ports became more automated.

The Savannah also required a crew of 124, one-third again as large as conventionally powered ships, and those crew members required additional training to work with the propulsion system.

The Maritime Administration, which owned Savannah, leased her in 1965 to American Export-Isbrandtsen Lines for cargo-passenger service. But the ship never turned a profit and was laid up in January 1972. The Savannah spent most of the 1970s tied up in Galveston, Texas, where it underwent regular inspections of its nuclear plant.

Since then, the ship, which has been designated a National Historic Landmark, has become a museum piece in search of a home. Following decommissioning, the nuclear fuel was removed; the process of cleaning out all remaining nuclear contamination continues in a Baltimore shipyard.

When that job is completed sometime in 2011, the Maritime Administration hopes to see Savannah converted into a floating museum. So far, there have been no takers.
