Excellent Collection
I got this collection because I had no idea what was going on in the fourth game. I am extremely happy with this purchase. I consider this a bargain because it's three games for 30 bucks. The only thing I think is horrible is that MGS3's second disk is missing.
MGS1- One word somes up this game. Epic. The story, characters, gameplay, bosses, everything is epic. This game deserves every bit of praise it's received. A solid 5/5.
MGS2- A weak sequal, but by no means a bad game. It's fun and chalanging, but some parts are too easy followed by extremley hard parts. Also, the new player charcter, Raiden, is dissapointing considering I had loved playing as Snake for the fourth and first game. A 4/5.
MGS3- I love this game. You play as Big Boss during the Cold War in Russia fighting your own mentor, her Cobra Unit, a primitive Metal Gear, and last but not least, Volgin. Pretty epic if you ask me. And one thing I truly love about this game is that it is really emotional. The most emotional game I've played. The last boss fight and that last, ringing gun shot is amazing. And the bosses are great, with The End being one of my favorite bosses of all time, right up there with Psycho Mantis. I'd like to give this game a 10/5, but I can't, so I'll have to stick with 5/5.
So overall this is an excellent collection with amazing games.

MGS The Essential Collection: a spy game series that rivals James Bond
Game series I started playing since I was a kid. A unique form of game play, fun, and exciting series that rivals James Bond! These games have parts to it that you have to get past with the aid of something outside the game! I have never played a game like that before, I love it! The series has a plot that is pure fiction but has a real-life spin to it. If you like spy games that have terrorists as the bad guys, this is your game!

MGS1 is the Playstation One version
As a huge fan of the MGS series I thought this sounded like the perfect set - all 3 games and accompanying features, together in one place....
....And it would have been if Konami had done it right. On with the problems of the set:
-First and foremost, MGS1 IS THE PLAYSTATION ONE VERSION. TOTALLY UNFORGIVABLE. Why Konami opted to use this inferior version over the now out-of-print 128-bit, enhanced Twin Snakes port I will never know. Additionally, this means you'll have to save to a PS1 memory card, which is an inconvenience. Including this version of the game is misleading, considering the great big "Playstation 2" banner atop the packaging.
-The MGS3 port here IS MISSING THE SECOND DISC. You know, that awesome bonus disc that had the retro games? No "essential collection" is complete without the classics that were available on that disc.
-The VR missions aren't here! Why they couldn't include these as a bonus disc with the port of MGS1, since they went with the inferior original PS1 port anyway, i have no idea.
Final verdict? Metal Gear Solid is a great gaming franchise, but this is just a terrible set for what it omits. To the people at Konami - when you put together a PROPER MGS set that has the Twin Snakes port of MGS1, the bonus disc for MGS3, and the VR missions, I'll be first in line to get it. But skip THIS set. Wait for the franchise to get a REAL essential collection.

BEWARE!
I feel completely shortchanged, Konami is successfully getting a good deal of money, you don't get the full MGS3:Subsistence, just disc one. The idea was that I buy a PS4 with MGS4 then get the full blown Solid trilogy with the first two original Metal Gear games to finish it off.
Well now I have to buy another Subsistence since MG and MG2:Solid Snake are on DISC TWO THATS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS SET.
Seriously, not one reviewer has mentioned that here! Did you even check your set out before reviewing?
