Editorial Review:

Editorial ReviewLong recognized as role-playing games par excellence, the Final Fantasy series gets a technological makeover in this installment (and series debut on the PlayStation). Shedding the two-dimensional graphics and limited sound capabilities of its predecessors, Final Fantasy VII features lush 3-D graphics, beautifully animated 'movie' sequences, and soundtrack-quality music. Coupled with the game's intricate storyline, endearing characters, and immense yet highly imaginative world, these new advancements make for a quite an engrossing experience.

The story of Final Fantasy VII centers around a solider named Cloud Strife, who joins forces with Avalanche, a group of resistance fighters, to take down an evil mega-corporation known as Shinra. (The fate of the world hangs in the balance, of course.) Truly epic in scope, this four-disc game requires a considerable amount of time to complete---this reviewer gladly gave up over 80 hours of his life to finish it. But it's definitely a rewarding adventure that every PlayStation owner should consider undertaking, especially since it's now one of the low-priced 'Greatest Hits' titles. --Joe Hon

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Why am I reviewing this so long after it came out?
Seriously, it's 2008, why am I reviewing this game so long after it came out? Well, because I want to. So there. Anyway, this game is marvelous; I still replay it every once in awhile, and it never gets old for me. You'd think I'd get sick of it after awhile, but I notice and appreciate something new each time I play it. I personally think this game has aged pretty well, and I'll continue to play it until my discs break in half.

Graphics (10/10): Well, by today's standards, graphics aren't so good. However, for their time, they deserved a 10 out of 10. There's something about seeing a character in 3-D (albeit rather blocky 3-D) that helps you identify more easily with the characters.

Music (10/10) : What can I say? The music in this game is both evocative and distinctive. The music fits the scenes and conveys mood very well. This is especially true of the overworld music-I feel like the world really is in dire straights whenever I hear it.

Characters (10/10): Wow. Character are excellently portrayed; they all have personalities and some kind of backstory. Even Yuffie. I mean, after playing a certain recent FF (12, cough), I've really come to appreciate the fact that no character in FF7 is just tacked on to the party (cough, FF12's Penelo, cough). Every single character has a backstory that's relevant or ties into the main story in some way. Overall, excellent characterization.

Story (10/10): Wow. That's all I can say. FF7 has an amazing intricate network of subplots and character histories on top of the main story. I love the complexity of it. However, the one drawback to this complex story is that it requires multiple playthroughs and some thought before you catch everything. To me though, this makes the game better, not worse. Also, the pacing of the story is excellent. I never felt bored or compelled to continue "just to reach the end".

Battle System (10/10): Once again, I have no complaints here. I love the materia system-it allows for some good customization, which I enjoyed.

Gameplay (10/10): This is my catch-all category. The game is just chock full of extras and side-quests. Plenty to explore and accomplish. The controls are easy to use and are rather intuitive. I really have no complaints.

Overall (10/10): NOTE this score is not an average, it's my subjective overall score. Personally, I cannot recommend this game enough. I realize that it looks rather dated by today's standards, but it's what's inside that counts, right? The core of this game is still gold. FF7 is like a fine piece of literature-it may be old but it's still a classic.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Potentially good, possibly overrated.
Final Fantasy VII had huge hype when it came out. The first Final Fantasy game to be on the Playstation and the first to use the newer graphics the Playstation offered. I really enjoyed playing the game and thought it very good. I do not judge games on graphics and thought FF7's was pretty good although sometimes it was frustrating but was very much made up for with the gameplay.

I'm going to go out on a limb here with some of the FF7 lovers and say that this game was extremely overrated. I agree it's a great game deserves more than one or two stars but I will confess that it seems the creaters of this game were lost a bit. Upon research I found that yes Final Fantasy VII was not slated for a Playstation release and in fact was for a Super Nintendo, but then switch to the Playstation. The grpahics were put together rather hastily but in my opinion serve there purpose and work. The storyline however feels like it was changed around a lot and there seem to be holes all over it.

The gameplay is awsome and the materia system is great and I truly love the summons and there attacks. (although it was repetative watching them over and over during battles with big enemies) The only disappointing thing about this game is it tries to lead us away from the fantasy elements of the previous games. Yes I agree FF7 is a fantasy RPG but it has strayed from the way in which it's older siblings fared. My only complaint and this is a big one is that the story just seems to be fragmented. When playing the game I can see writers changing there minds and new writers coming and going and the script being changed again and again and many forgetting what happened earlier in the story while writing the end.

No matter what others say this game is not the best and definately not the worst RPG out there and is definately not the worst FF game. (come on Mystic Quest wasn't that bad..."dodges tomatos")

It is true this game was highly overated and the gamers that started Final Fantasy with this game hate the older ones only because of the old grpahics and the fact VII was their first.

This game is great and I highly reccomment it. You will find the storyline to have problems but they quickly fix themselves as this Final Fantasy game is a bit more faster paced than previous ones.(added snowboarding and bike racing games)

Overall I gave this game three stars and four for the fun because I feel it could have been much much better but it's still an awsome game and will always be.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - As good as i had heard
So some people claim that fanboys play this. That the only reason it is better than ff6 is better graphics. I bought this game ten years after its release, and i have played many modern games. I played the kingom hearts games before this. Graphics have nothing to do with this. Those that say that its good simply choose the games they are familiar with over the new games. Those that say the graphics are bad need to get over it and play games for what really matters. The graphics are classic and, while i look forward to a remake, i will always play the original. After playing the other ff games, Kingdom hearts is better than all FF games except this one. The music is outstanding, and really ties in with the story. I'm gonna buy the soundtrack someday. It helps you to feel the emotions that the characters feel. I know that most people know the shocker in the story, but to avoid spoilers i will just say that it is one of the sadest moments i have ever seen and the most emotional game ever. The story is beyond emotion, though, as you get to see the histories and reasons for fighting for every character. You might not see Vincent as much as others but there is a ps2 sequel all about him. The world was amazing and finally unique in the sereis. Gameplay is better than turn-based but not as good as FF12 or better yet kingdom hearts. And don't think the emotion makes this corny; FF10 try to be emotional and comes out as cheesy. FF7 can make you cry (or want to if you are tough enough to resist) without really trying to make you be emotional. The game has the darkest mood in it and Cloud has become my favorite character for his role here, in the seques/prequels, and his role in Kingdom Hearts. Vincent is an amazing character as well. Anyways, the game has some haters and some fans, but it really is personal preference and you should play before you chose for yourself. It sells well enough, even used, so if you don't like it go ahead and sell it. I personally am still willing to pay more than i did to buy it if i had to do it again.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the Best Games of All-Time
Let me preface this by saying I am not a fan of role-playing games. But from the first time I saw my friend playing this game, I was hooked. The battles, though turn-based, are incredibly exciting. The gameplay is so deep that you could easily play this game multiple times with different strategies and still succeed. But the best part of the game is the story. Cloud, who wants desperately to be something he is not and never was; a hero, and in the end he becomes exactly that. Sephiroth, the fallen angel, who was a hero once but turned on the planet that he believed hated him. And the Shinra Corporation, who ruins the Planet in the name of greed and power. And each of the ancillary characters are interesting, as well, albeit some less than others. The graphics, though clearly dated, are still pretty good. The cinemas which were ground-breaking at the time, still hold up well also.

If you have not played this game by now, you probably won't be convinced by these words. But please, do yourself a favor and get lost in an amazing tale.

And I didn't even mention the great mini-games, such as Chocobo Breeding/Racing! Just play it, already!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Worst Final Fantasy Game
I am a huge RPG fan and have played all of the Final Fantasy games, and FFVII (7) is the worst. The graphics are TERRIBLE, the story is long and boring, and the music (aside from the battle theme) is nothing special. I know it is often considered to be the best FF, but I just cannot see why other than it being the first FF for Playstation and thus the first one most FF fans played. I suggest skipping this one and playing FFIX FFX and FFXII (9 10 and 12) first.

This summer we gave a presentation on simplifying the software estimation process for modern distributed systems. In it, we tried to boil down 10  years of thinking and experience on the subject; our goal was to make the process much more repeatable than it has historically been and as simple as is appropriate. On this [...]

With the accidental discovery of "black silicon," Harvard physicists may have very well changed the digital photography, solar power and night vision industries forever. What is black silicon, you say? Well, it's just as it sounds. Black silicon. It's what this revolutionary new material does that's important, starting with light sensitivity. Early indications show black silicon is 100 to 500 times more sensitive to light than a traditional silicon wafer.

To create the special silicon, Harvard physicist Eric Mazur shined a super powerful laser onto a silicon wafer. The laser's output briefly matches all the energy produced by the sun falling onto the Earth's entire surface at a given moment in time. To spice the experiment up, he also had researchers apply sulfur hexafluoride, which the semiconductor industry uses to make etchings in silicon for circuitry. Seriously, he did this just for kicks and to secure more funding for an old project.

“I got tired of metals and was worrying that my Army funding would dry up,” he said. “I wrote the new direction into a research proposal without thinking much about it — I just wrote it in; I don’t know why," he said.

The new experiment made the silicon black to the naked eye. Under an electron microscope, however, the dark sheen was revealed to be thousands, if not millions, of tiny spikes. As we said above, those spikes had an amazing effect on the light sensitivity of the wafer. Mazur said the material also absorbs about twice as much visible light as traditional silicon, and can detect infrared light that is invisible to today's silicon detectors.

And there's no change to the manufacturing process, Mazur said, so existing semiconductor facilities can create black silicon without much additional effort or, more importantly, money. [New York Times]

Reports claim the seven surviving actors who played The Doctor will reunite for this year's BBC 'Children in Need' telethon. That means David Tennant and Peter Davision would join Tom Baker, Colin Baker, Sylvestor McCoy, Paul Mcgann and Christopher Eccleston for a reunion fans thought was impossible.
